Own texts for sharing (og:title, og:description)
- The text you write stays in your browser
- Measures width in pixels, not just characters
- No sign-up
How it works
Write, look and adjust
-
Write or fetch
Write your title and meta description, or fetch them from a page that already exists. The length is shown right under each field.
-
See what it can look like
Switch between desktop and mobile. The text is measured in pixels in the Arial typeface and is cut off roughly where Google tends to cut.
-
Adjust and copy
Shorten or write more until the meter says “Good length”. Then copy the texts and paste them where you publish the page.
Good to know about the preview
- It is an estimate. Google gives no fixed limits and cuts according to width, device and search query.
- Google often rewrites both title and description when another text is judged to fit the search query better.
- The width varies between devices and typefaces. The measurement is made in your browser with Arial, or the typeface on your device that is closest.
- Real results can show dates, shortcuts to subpages, ratings and images that are not shown here.
- What you write stays in your browser. Only the web address is sent, and only when you press “Fetch”.
- “Fetch” lets our server read the page and a few standard files on the same website, for example robots.txt. The server does not run JavaScript, so texts that are built in the browser do not show.
How long can a title be?
Google gives no fixed limit, but in the search results (SERP) on desktop a title is usually cut off after about 580 pixels. That usually corresponds to 50–60 characters. Below about 30 characters there is usually room to say more. It is the width that decides, not the number of characters: an m or a W takes several times as much space as an i, and capital letters are wider than small ones. A title with many wide letters is therefore cut off earlier than one with narrow ones. On mobile the title fits on two lines, so more is often shown there. Put the most important thing first, and it matters less if the end disappears.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 70–150 characters. On desktop the result holds two lines, about 920 pixels of text, and on mobile about 680 pixels, roughly 110 characters, is a safe level. If the description is shorter, there is room to say more. If it is longer, it is usually cut off and ends with three dots. Write a short summary of the page with a reason to click, not a list of keywords. If you want a longer walkthrough, there is our guide: How to write a title and meta description (in Swedish).
Why does Google show a different text than mine?
Google often rewrites both title and description when another text is judged to fit the search query better. The description is then usually taken from the text of the page and the title from, for example, the main heading. It cannot be fully controlled. What helps is a title and a description that match the content of the page and what visitors are searching for. The preview here is an estimate: real results can also show dates, ratings or shortcuts to subpages.
What is Open Graph?
Open Graph is a few lines in the page’s code that control how the link looks when it is shared on, for example, LinkedIn or Facebook, or in a message: an image, a heading (og:title) and a description (og:description). If they are missing, the service chooses for itself, and the result is often a grey box without an image. You can use different texts for sharing than in Google. The image is usually 1 200 × 630 pixels. If you want to see how the rest of the page is doing, you can run the website test.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about the search result preview
Is what I write sent anywhere?
No. What you write (title, description, website name and the texts for sharing) is measured and shown in your browser and is not stored. The only thing that leaves your device is the web address, and only when you press “Fetch”. Then our server reads the page and a few standard files on the same website, for example robots.txt, and picks out the title and description. The address is not stored. To limit the number of fetches there are counters that are reset after one day at the most.
Does Google show exactly this?
No, it is an estimate. Google cuts according to width, which varies between devices, and often rewrites both title and description. Real results can also show dates, ratings or shortcuts to subpages. Use the preview to avoid obvious cutting, not as an answer key.
Why is my title cut off when it is only 55 characters?
Because it is the width that counts, not the characters. Wide letters such as m and W take more space than narrow ones such as i and l, and capital letters take more space than small ones. The meter shows the width in pixels, so you see at once whether the title fits. Try shortening it or putting the most important thing first.
Why can’t my page be fetched?
Most often the address is misspelled, the page requires a login or the server blocks automatic requests. For technical reasons, pages on the same server as yourweb.se cannot be fetched from here. Our server does not run JavaScript, so texts that are built in the browser do not show. You can always type the texts in yourself.
